Inside: These nine social media home trends aren’t worth the hype so skip them and opt for something more timeless.

A guest post by Cora Gold

Social media influencers rely on trends to remain relevant.

This applies to most types of content being created by influencers including home decor. They promote products and ideas to try and keep their followers interested.

Unfortunately, that can lead people to make short-term interior design choices and buy things they ultimately don’t need.

Read on for nine social media home trends that aren’t worth the hype. I’d suggest skipping these trends and opting for a more minimalist and timeless approach.

As an added benefit, you’ll reduce waste, save money, and keep clutter out of your home.

9 Social Media Home Trends That Aren’t Worth the Hype

Social media influencers often rely on the latest trends to try and convince you to spend more money.

They often make a commission on items they share so they benefit from getting you to believe that you need it.

But to avoid wasting money on unnecessary items that are likely to become clutter it is important to know what trending items definitely aren’t worth the hype. Here are 9 of them.

1. Fast-Fashion Decor

You might have heard about fast fashion clothing, but it exists in the home decor world, too.

The same brands mass producing cheap clothes for the biggest, fastest profit are also making decor items such as rugs, pillows, and more. Social media gurus promote these products from sellers like Temu, Amazon, and Wish.

These items might be budget-friendly, but they aren’t good for people or the planet.

Fast fashion companies using speedy production and manufacturing processes add harmful chemicals to their products, which may include their home decor. The cheap materials don’t last and quickly pollute the environment.

Buying high-quality furniture and decor is much better for your home and your wallet in the long run.

2. Fridge Organizing Containers

Influencers on TikTok have popularized refrigerator organization products like clear baskets and soda holders. They might look nice, but it’s a myth that you need to use them to be organized.

Do you really need to pour juice from one container into another just for the aesthetic appeal?

Save money by using what your groceries already come in. Only transfer food into a new container if the original packaging isn’t resealable.

3. Single-Use Household Products

Single-use products look incredibly convenient in trendy social media videos. The downside is constantly adding to local landfills after each use while spending more money than you need to.

A recent product that has gained traction online is disposable face towels, which are advertised to be more hygienic for washing your face than a regular towel.

However, throwing at least one towel away every day creates a lot of waste. Instead, use washcloths, swap them out regularly and wash them with vinegar to keep them in good shape.

Properly washing items like towels, utensils, and dishes cuts out the need for disposable alternatives.

4. Maximalist Wall Decor

Full gallery walls covered in mismatched frames of various sizes are popular among maximalists.

Some people think this social media home trend creates a homey atmosphere, but it just uses excessive decor that requires tons of manufacturing materials and costs a significant amount.

Reduce your home’s visual clutter by opting for minimalist wall decor. If you want to decorate a blank wall, choose one large piece of art rather than 10 small ones. You can use minimalist design without making your house look boring.

Imagine in a few years your design tastes change, and you’re tired of all the trendy wall decor you filled your home with. Avoid sending them to a landfill by sticking with one or two pieces you really love.

5. Vivid Micro-Trend Patterns

Every year, home decor brands come out with a new eye-catching pattern that starts to pop up everywhere – think the checker print that many Gen-Zers love.

Adding these prints might make a living space feel brand new, but they’ll quickly go out of style like intense prints of decades past.

They can also clash with other items in your home and make the space feel more cluttered.

Instead, subtle statement pieces could add similar character to your house while providing versatile decor options.

When buying a rug or throw pillows, try to steer away from something too trendy. Choosing pieces in your favorite color or in a neutral pattern will fit better in your home for years to come.

6. Bold Bathroom Tiles

Similar to patterned decor, bold bathroom tiles are making a comeback. Tiles create unique designs and come in every hue, but they’re also an older trend that already went out of style in the early 2000s.

There’s a reason why modern designers opt for white marble flooring and walls — it’s easy to match to any decorating scheme.

As your design tastes change over time, you won’t need to pay expensive renovation fees to replace bold tiles.

7. Bubble Sofas

Classic, clean lines are always beautiful, but bubble furniture is a statement piece that you’ll eventually replace. They’re like the inflatable chairs of the 90s — people will eventually move on.

Avoid overconsumption and short-term social media home trends by choosing a new couch that matches any aesthetic.

It’s much easier to update your throw pillows than an entire sofa. You could even find one made with sustainable materials to merge your love of the planet and your lasting purchase.

8. Platform Beds

If you spend any time on Pinterest, you’ve likely seen oak platform beds covered in aesthetically pleasing wrinkled linen comforters. Although they make cute pictures, low-bed frames are a trend that comes and goes.

Many people stop investing in this type of bed frame when they need better support. If you have recurring lower back pain or knee aches, getting on and off a platform bed is uncomfortable. It sits on the ground rather than bed frame legs that raise the mattress a few feet in the air.

Save yourself from physical aches and bumping your shins into the hidden corners beneath your bedding by opting for a classic raised frame. You’ll gain a storage space under your mattress and a well-made bed frame you can use for years to help make your bedroom a more relaxing space.

9. Open Shelving

Throughout the past few years open shelving either in the office, living room, or kitchen has become a very popular option.

The problem? It’s not very practical. Those areas collect dust and it can be challenging for them not to create visual clutter.

They can tempt you to purchase additional decor items to place on them and they’re difficult to keep neatly organized. Fight the urge to take down the perfectly good upper cabinets in your kitchen and seriously consider the realities of open shelving.

Skip the Social Media Home Decor Trends & Opt for Timeless

Whether you want to live a more minimalist lifestyle, make your life greener, or invest in decor that lasts, these are the social media home trends you’ll need to avoid. They might look great online, but they’ll only lead to additional purchases and continuing overconsumption as you chase the changing trends.
