Why Mold Grows In A Conservatory

Mold is a living fungus that spreads using spores that float in the air until they find a suitable spot to set up home.

Their favourite home is one where there is moisture, warmth and a little humidity. If you have a traditional conservatory then you are probably going to have all of these in that one room. Which is why mold is found in conservatories a lot.

Conservatories often have a lot of glass or polycarbonate which does get warm in the summer and this with the temperature outside causes moisture to develop.

In winter you might have heating that causes the difference in temperature and this can lead to condensation and mold.

Moisture and a warm room is the perfect conditions for mold to grow. Often there is little ventilation and this creates the most perfect environment for mold to set up home and start growing.

How To Spot Mold In Your Conservatory

There are going to be signs of mold. You might not see it, but it can be there—steadily growing and making a home for itself.

Sometimes people can smell the mold—it often has a musty odour—but this isn’t always the case. You have to be on the look-out for any signs of black mold growth.

It can occur on your windows, around your windows and really any spot that creates the perfect home.

You have to be vigilant with checking for mold. You really don’t want it in your home.

Practical Steps To Prevent Mold Growth

There are some things that you can do to reduce the possible outbreak of mold.

  • Keeping your conservatory clean. Mold spores will land on surfaces that might not be ideal and they don’t start to grow. Keeping your conservatory clean can and will reduce the number of mold spores in the room. Dusting, vacuuming and window cleaning are all top priorities.
  • Reduce the amount of condensation in your room, open windows and let the moisture out and the air inside your home. Keeping the room in a state that isn’t suitable to support mold growth is key to keeping your home mold free.
  • Monitor and maintain the humidity in your conservatory. If you are drying washing, this increases the humidity in the air, the same too if you have a few house plants in that room. If a room gets too warm let in fresh air or remove it with a dehumidifier.
  • Maintaining the room, make sure that you are keeping up with the general maintenance of your home, this includes replacing sealant that is no longer doing the task it’s supposed to do.

Step-by-Step Mold Removal Guide

If you have mold in your conservatory already then you are going to need to take these steps.

  • Wear protection, gloves and face mask as mold spores are dangerous and you don’t want to be breathing these in.
  • Open windows or door to ventilate the room.
  • Choose your preferred product to tackle the situation. I recommend either tea tree oil or hydrogen peroxide as these two are the only items that can kill all mold to the tip of the root.
  • Check daily to make sure outbreak has gone
  • Put together a plan to keep a closer eye on the problem so it doesn’t grow back
  • If the mold has spread too far consider getting the professionals in to clean the area for you

Addressing Extensive Mold Growth

If you have lots of areas of mold growth, I’m talking about if it’s spread across your walls, if it’s in the flooring these are times when it might be better to ask for professional help.

Sometimes, starting fresh is easier—for example, I replaced my roof with a better insulated one and this has prevented mold growth in areas where before keeping it under control seemed impossible.

I had a polycarbonate roof and the inside of the roof would drip with water daily and I had to dehumidifiers going 24/7 in that room.

Dealing with the time commitment I needed to keep the conservatory dry became so difficult that it was decided the only option was to replace the roof and increase the ventilation.

It was drastic action but it solved the problem immediately.

What Causes Condensation And What You Can Do To Prevent It

Condensation is caused by a number of different things and finding out what is causing it in your home will require checking if any of these apply.

  • Drying laundry inside can increase the moisture in the air and can create condensation if there is inadequate ventilation
  • Showering and not ventilating the bathroom, it can creep around your home.
  • House plants can cause condensation through the added moisture in the pots and the plant growing
  • Cooking and not ventilating the kitchen
  • Heating the home and having a different temperature inside to outside, more common in the winter months causes condensation
  • Poor quality materials and/or if something has broken
  • Lack of ventilation in the home can create condensation

The best advice to give anyone for condensation is to eliminate what could be causing the problem and if it is still happening seek professional help.
